Awards and Commendations
TL is delighted to announce our Video Toolbox columnist, Robert
D. Wilson, is the inaugural winner of the Hoshino
Takashi Award for haiku, sponsored by the World Haiku Club.
Teacher Librarian is thrilled to offer its congratulations to
our Strategy columnist, Barbara Braxton, who has been awarded the
prestigious Dromkeen
Librarian’s Award for 2003.
She was recognized
for her innovative and indefatigable approach to encouraging
a love of reading amongst Australia’s young
people, particularly in the online environment. Barbara’s
library at Palmerston District Primary School in the Australian
Capital District, is one of the school’s greatest strengths.
Visitors to the school are always impressed by the energy and creativity
that is evident in the many and varied library-based activities
and displays encouraging student engagement with literature. She
enthuses staff with her big ideas and inspires them with her ability
to follow through, often involving the whole staff and school in
the celebration of key literary events. Always keen to push the
boundaries professionally, Barbara has embraced the Internet. She
is a prolific and award-winning creator of web sites that promote
literature to young people. She has made an enormous contribution
to online discussion of children’s literature and its promotion
amongst her peers, often providing generous research assistance.
Barbara is the driving force behind Read Around Australia, the
Young Australian Readers’ Awards and International School
Libraries Day.
Strategy columnist Barbara Braxton wins International
Learning Quest Challenge 2003 special award for inspiring students to learn
online with her Quizzard of Oz, Hogwarts Challenge and Horrendo's
Curse learning projects.
