Dr. David Loertscher, an important and well-respected leader in school librarianship in
the United States, was president of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL, 1995-1996),
during the development and writing of the standards and the development of School Library Media
Research (the online journal) and Knowledge Quest (the practitioner journal of AASL). Loertscher has
written and presented extensively on a variety of topics in the field of library and information
science and is currently president of Hi Willow Research & Publishing, which focuses on providing
professional resources for the school library media specialist.
Esther Rosenfeld, a luminary in the field of school librarianship in Canada, was president
of the Ontario School Library Association (2002 and 2003). At the TDSB, Mrs. Rosenfeld is responsible
for program support for its 570 elementary and secondary school libraries and for a central resource
support infrastructure for all schools (including a central professional library, a central media
library, and central technical services for school libraries). According to the TDSB, Mrs. Rosenfeld
is "a strong advocate for the importance of school libraries and school librarians…and is well
known within the TDSB and indeed throughout the education community as a collaborative, inspiring
and encouraging leader." Just this year, OSLA recognized Mrs. Rosenfeld's dedicated leadership in
libraries with the OSLA Exceptional Achievement award. Mrs. Rosenfeld has also written and
presented widely on a variety of topics in the field of school libraries.
