National Organizations

American Association of School Librarians: The AASL sponsors the following Internet sites:

  • AASL Home Page
  • ICONnect -- This site is designed to support school library media specialists as they assume leadership positions in the use of the Internet in the school community. Includes online courses, student and family activities, and online tours to prepare school librarians for leadership roles.

Assembly on Literature for Adolescents (ALAN)
ALAN is a special-interest group of the National Council of Teachers of English. Its members include teachers, authors, librarians, publishers, and others with an interest in young adult literature. The organization publishes The ALAN Review, a journal emphasizing new books, research, and methods of teaching adolescent literature. The full text of the journal is available online.

Association for Library Service to Children
A division of the American Library Association, this organization's home page includes annotated collections of Internet resources for librarians, teachers, parents, and children. Also available are book awards lists and an extensive catalog of ALSC publications and products.

Children's Book Council
This trade association of children's book publishers provides information and publications useful to school librarians, including official materials for National Children's Book Week celebrated every November.

Consortium for School Networking
CoSN promotes the use of telecommunications to improve K-12 learning. Members represent state and local education agencies, nonprofits, companies and individuals.

Society of School Librarians International
Organized as a national, independent school library association in 1985, the goal of this organization is "to speak singularly and forcefully for the unique needs of school librarians in the educational community." SSLI promotes professional development and training for school library media practitioners at the building and district level.
